  • Paul Bentley

    Paul Bentley, a Birmingham, Alabama native, received a BS in Marketing from Auburn University in 1997 and began his 25-year career with Summer Classics. He is currently the Sales Team Leader for the southeastern sales group. Paul is actively involved with Camp Winnataska having served as a leader, Blackfoot, and Camp Winnataska Board member. He currently serves on the Board of Friends of Winnataska, Inc., where he has served as a past chairperson.

  • Julie M. Ellis

    Julie M. Ellis is the Director of Business Development at Christian & Small and is on the Teach for America Alabama Advisory Board. She served on the boards of Leadership Vestavia Hills and the Higher Academics Summer School. At All Saints’ Episcopal Church she served on Vestry and chaired the Youth Steering Committee. Julie and her husband, John, have two boys who attended Camp Winnataska. The oldest served as a leader, Blackfoot, and Program Specialist. The youngest is a leader and looks forward to being a Blackfoot.

  • Elin Glenn

    Elin Glenn works in Public Relations for the Hoover Public Library and The Library Theatre. She also has worked on public relations and marketing campaigns for various non-profits. A fourth-generation camper, Elin began as a camper, then served as a leader, staff member, and assistant program director. She served on the Camp Winnataska Board of Directors, and four years overseeing the Summer Operations of Camp. She is a Weekly Director and enjoys watching her children enjoy Christian Camping at its Best as fifth-generation campers. She currently serves as the Friends of Winnataska Board of Directors liaison to the Camp Winnataska Board of Directors.

  • Anna Cather McClendon

    Anna Cather McClendon has served Camp Winnataska as a camper, leader, comanche, adult coordinator, and volunteer. She has a degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University and a Masters in Early Childhood Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She taught kindergarten and first grade before taking some time to raise children. She and her husband, Ryan are parents to 4 beautiful children; William (14), Virginia (12), Wilhelmina (7) and Margaret (7). She has served as president of the Vestavia Hills Library Jr. Board, taught Elementary Sunday school at Trinity United Methodist and started and led a Daisy Troop in Vestavia. She hopes to be a small part of making sure that for many, many more years, kids will come to Winnataska and be a part of camp traditions, grow in their spiritual journey, and meet lifelong friends.

  • Karen Arthur Moore

    Karen Moore joined Pearce, Bevill, Leesburg, Moore, P.C. in 2002 after completing a Masters of Accountancy from Auburn University. She specializes in small business accounting and tax services as well as estate planning. She is a member of the AICPA, ASCPA, and served as Past President of the Birmingham Chapter of Young CPAs and Past President of the Alabama Board of Young CPAs. Karen has been a camper, leader, staff, and volunteer at Camp Winnataska and currently serves as the Treasurer of the FOW Board.

  • Tina Gillespie Ryan

    Tina Gillespie Ryan started attending camp at 6 years old as a Chico, and has had the privilege of experiencing camp through the eyes of a camper, leader, Comanche, program specialist, and currently, as the Caretaker's wife. She graduated from Birmingham-Southern College and began working for the Alabama Association of Nonprofits, an organization that provides resources for groups looking to start nonprofits, and provides professional development and advocates for Alabama's nonprofits. She has worked in the banking industry and currently works as a public accountant. Outside of the office she enjoys spending time at camp, since she lives there. Her family loves hiking and nature walks, going on trail rides, tending to the goats and chickens, and jumping in to volunteer with various events held at camp throughout the year.

  • Hunter Thorington

    Hunter Thorington is an Electrical Engineer, owner of Auburn Productions, and team leader who drives results by focusing on process, ownership, and problem-solving. Hunter leads a team of developers designing wireless communications products for sports teams, theater, and broadcast markets. Hunter and his wife,Caitlin, have 3 children, all future Campers of Winnataska. Together they enjoy volunteering, mentoring leaders, and giving back to Camp Winnataska, where they met as Comanche and Blackfoot serving on the summer staff of 2010. Hunter currently serves as the President of the Friends of Winnataska Board of Directors.

  • Bob White

    Bob White is a Professional Geologist and owner of Quail Environmental Consulting. His association with Camp Winnataska began with encouragement from his mother, Ann Marie Strickland White, who also attended Winnataska in her youth. Bob became a camper in the 1960s and has continued to volunteer his time, talents, and leadership in many different capacities within the Camp Winnataska community. Bob serves on the Friends of Winnataska, Inc. Board, and the Geological Sciences Advisory Board (GSAB) of the University of Alabama.

  • Foster Yeilding

    Foster Yeilding began serving Camp Winnataska in 2007 as an original Board Member of the newly incorporated 501c3. He has been an instrumental member of the facilities committee of the Camp Winnataska Board of Directors. His dedication to camp stems not from his own experience as a child, but from the experiences of his father, wife, and children who have been positively influenced by their time as campers and staff members over the years.

  • Julie Cochran - Development Coordinator

    Julie Cochran is a middle school Math teacher, and has taught in the private schools of Nashville, TN and Vestavia City Schools until staying home with her children for the past ten years. Her love of Winnataska started as a Chico camper, and she never missed a summer until after her second summer as a Comanche. She has served as a Program Specialist and weekly director, and most recently is serving as the Development Coordinator for Friends of Winnataska.

  • Katherine Ann Price Garmon (KAP)

    Katherine Ann Price Garmon (KAP) is the daughter of D. Ray Price, who was the developer and director of Camp Winnataska from 1922 to 1957. Kap has served as summer camp director, a weekly director, was on the original Board of Directors of Camp Winnataska, and served Board of Directors of BSA during the Joint Venture. Kap is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and is active in the Birmingham Audubon Society. Kap’s family lived at camp during the summers when she was growing up and can usually be found at Camp in the summer months.

  • Barbara Sloan - Former Development Director

    Barbara Sloan is the recently retired Development Director for Friends of Winnataska. For seven years, she led a Capital Campaign, Annual Funds, and Special projects, raising $2.5 million for Camp. Sloan was a camper, leader, special leader, and Comanche, following the lead of her grandmother, Dorothy Bowron Collins, a camper at the first Winnataska camp in 1918. She has served as chairman of the board of Camp Winnataska, Friends of Winnataska, the Birmingham Area Theatre Alliance, and Speech Arts Club.

Meetings of the Friends of Winnataska Board of Directors are held monthly, alternating between virtual meetings and the Hoover Public Library. They typically are held on the 4th Monday. They are open to the public. Please email info@friendsofwinnataska.org to verify meeting location, date and time.
